classic car cruise, man posing with car downtown

The annual D.A.R.E. Show & Shine and downtown Cruise was a big hit yet again for our quaint Central Point (Oregon). This classic and contemporary car show and cruise are put on by the local Central Point Police Department and proceeds benefit our district 6 schools with the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program for 5th Graders. I did this program as a 5th grader and my now, 6th-grader son got to experience it this past school year. District 6 is one of the very few school systems in Oregon that sill offers this beneficial program. Thank you to all who invest the time and hard work to show off your amazing cars and entertain us at the cruise. It really makes for a fun, small-town event and what a great opportunity to be able to show off a collector’s piece. I do wonder if generations 20-years from now will still have an appreciation for these types of vintage pieces.

Show & Shine

The Show & Shine is held down at the Twin Creeks Park in Central Point. This is an opportunity to open the hoods and show off the pretty polished interiors and artistic engine parts. Forgive me, I know nothing about cars (haha!). But I like all the pretty colors, chrome, metals, emblems, vintage elements, and character that each enthusiast puts into their vehicles for the sake of showing it off. I loved all the unique versions of propping the hoods open as well (peruse the collage).

The Downtown Cruise

The cruise is probably my more favorite part of the event as you get to see all these classic and contemporary cars in action. I don’t know what that buggy-style one is called, but when I spotted it at the show & shine, I thought it would have to be pulled by horses, apparently not! I love all the paint jobs with rich colors in reds, blues, purples, and vintage pastels. There’s always that one guy with the rad hydraulics. There’s always a few guys super proud of their loud mufflers and find it amusing to power them up as loud as they can. I enjoy seeing the community out enjoying the show in the lovely evening temperatures, being social in our newly renovated downtown streets. It makes me feel that this is what a small town is all about. My kids and I get to do a few ride-along with an older gentleman (Don) we met at last years event… whenever we see him he announces that he’s still alive! 🙁 It’s fun to talk with him about his life and what a speedfreak he used to be. I hope to see him again next year.
